Women’s soccer players junior Grace Linton and redshirt sophomore Ashley Sweetnam nabbed Heartland Conference Player of the Week on Sept. 18.

This was the first time both players received Player of the Week for Newman. Sweetnam is goalie for the women’s team while Linton is a forward.

The weekend that earned the two players their honor, Linton scored five goals and an grabbed an assist. She had scored in each of the past four games, putting up three goals in the team’s win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Sept. 12. She is third in the nation with seven goals so far this season.

In Sweetnam’s 270 minutes of playing time that weekend, she allowed only one goal.

Sweetnam was proud of her performance and felt like the honor gave her and the team confidence to get through the week against DBU and St. Edward’s University.

“I’ll be honest, my performances those two games were like any other. I made a few saves and my defense and I worked well together to hold out the two shutouts.”

Sweetnam said she felt like the honor was bolstered by her performance from her defense.

“I made a few good saves and other than that, it was just a combination of my defense and I working hard and working well together to keep those shutouts,” she said. “My overall performance was good, I made the saves I needed to make and helped my defense through my talking.”

Linton is new to the team this year having transferred from Emporia State University. She had received Player of the week at Emporia State University but this was her first honor as a Jet.

Linton felt like she was playing at the top of her game that week. She said that she and the other forwards did a great job at finding a way to score goals.

“I feel as if I played the best I could right alongside my teammates,” Linton said. “Our job is to finish the chances after all the hard work he team did to get us the ball. That weekend, my teammates gave me great opportunities to find the back of the net and I did my best to do so.”

Linton is confident that the rest of the season is going to continue as the start has.

“I think I can speak for the whole team in saying that we are very excited to make a statement this season.”
