Newman may begin offering female students the opportunity to stay in an all-girls hall in the fall of 2019.
Last year, a resident assistant proposed the idea to have an all-girls hall to create more of a Catholic, or religious, experience in the dorms.
Most likely, the living quarters would be set up in the Adorers of the Blood of Christ convent, said Scott Mudloff, director of residence life.
“We are working with the convent to have ‘house of discernment’ over there, and it’s dependent on them,” he said. “They do have a section on their third floor where they would be willing to let us have some ladies that would want to live in this style of a more strict Catholic experience.”
The facilities in the ASC convent would provide a different experience for those wanting this on-campus living option. The rooms would be all single rooms, however they would have to use communal showers. Residence life was going to try to have the opportunity ready for the coming fall semester, but the living space is not available yet.
“It’s something we’re working on,” Mudloff said. “We don’t know what kind of response we would have. I think the first year we’d be thrilled if five people wanted to do it.”
