The Newman men’s golf team finished up its regular season play last Tuesday at the Dallas Baptist University Patriot Classic with a 14th place finish overall, up one spot from last years finish.

Head men’s golf coach Kent Notestine said the team will head into the post-season tournament not ranked as high as he had hoped.

“As far as where we stand with ranking, we’re kind of average,” Notestine said. “There are around 230 division II golf teams, and the last ranking we were in, we were 104th.”

Senior Stefan DeDominicis said this season had some setbacks that didn’t allow the team to gain any momentum.

“We ended the fall season strong, but couldn’t really carry that same form over into the spring,” DeDominicis said. “Unfortunately we’ve had to deal with some bad weather and some other internal issues that prevented us from improving.”

Throughout the tough season, DeDominicis said it’s been up the team to keep a positive attitude.

“We’ve had a few guys come really close to breaking par, and even had a couple rounds under 300. We’ve also really come together both on and off the course.”

DeDominicis said slowly but surely the team is getting better, and the focus now is on the next two weeks before they the conference tournament.

“We’re hoping we can catch a couple breaks,” DeDominicis said, “And string a few good rounds together so we can finish the season stronger than it started.”

Notestine said they’ve had some big wins in the past, but will need to have four guys on their A game.

“We’ve got about 10 days before we head out for conference,” he said. “So we’re going to grind it out and practice hard and see if we can have another break out tournament.”

The tournament will start Sunday April 22 in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
