SAAC plans to fundraise for charity

The first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meeting was held on Oct. 2 and the committee has many plans for the upcoming school year.

SAAC is a student-run club that works to promote sports on campus and increase communication between student-athletes and the NCAA.

This year, SAAC plans to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and it is also planning a dance marathon with Children’s Miracle Network. SAAC is also planning to continue sponsoring previous events such as Soles-4-Souls and Drop-N-Shop.

It consists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, two faculty sponsors and two representatives from each sport on campus. Any eligible athlete who has been nominated by his or her coach can join.

“The Student Athlete Advisory Committee of Newman University’s mission is to support and promote all sports throughout campus while enhancing communication between student-athletes, coaches, and administration,” SAAC President Gladys Azzun said. “Our goal is to better improve the image of the student-athletes by engaging in the community with social events and service.”

Last year, SAAC ran a Soles-4-Souls shoe drive during basketball games. Anyone who donated a pair of shoes at the game was given free admission.

SAAC meets every first and third Tuesday of each month.
