Campus activities happening before the semester ends

By Vantage Staff

The school year is almost over: Regular classes end today. Scholars Day happens Friday. And finals are next week.

It’s a busy time that will also include several events, including a few parties and lots of free food.

Here’s a look at when and where Newman’s year-ending activities will take place:

Spring Fling: Campus Activities Board is putting on this free annual outdoor event from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Founders Plaza. It will include a dunk tank, an inflatable side, a watermelon eating contest and lots of food, including funnel cakes, snow cones, fried Oreos, wings and cotton candy.

Last Call for Grads: This event, which is open only to December 2024 or May 2025 Newman graduates, will happen from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, in the Alumni Center, which is on the second floor of the Dugan Library. It’s a free event that will include food, drinks, games, a photo booth and prizes. Those who will be attending were asked to RSVP by Wednesday.

Breakfast & Bingo: This party happens at the end of every semester at Newman and offers students a chance to play bingo, eat breakfast for dinner and win prizes. It happens at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, in Mabee Dining Hall.

Free graduation photos: University Relations is inviting students to get free professional  graduation portraits taken from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, in front of Sacred Heart Hall at the Cardinal Newman sculpture. If it rains, the photo session will move inside to the Student Success Center in Dugan Library.

Baccalaureate Mass: Newman always puts on a special mass in honor of graduation, and this year, it will happen at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 16, in St. John’s Chapel, Sacred Heart Hall. Graduates and their families are invited to attend the mass, which will include special music and readings. Bishop Carl Kemme of the Wichita Diocese will lead the mass, and a few graduates will speak. A reception will follow in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP to newmanu.wufoo.com/forms/baccalaureate-mass-rsvp-form

Commencement: This year’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Park City Arena, 8151 N. Park City Drive in Park City. Anyone can attend. Those who can’t go in person can watch a livestream of the ceremony. The link will be available at newmanu.edu/registrar/graduation
