Newman students and staff filled Founders Plaza on Wednesday evening for a party to celebrate the feast day of St. John Henry Newman, which is today.
The event was a collaboration between Campus Ministry, Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Activities Board, and other campus organizations, and it drew dozens of students out to socialize around dusk.
Music played over a loudspeaker as students helped themselves to meatballs, chicken nuggets and spinach and artichoke dip provided by Great Western Dining.
The party also included two fire pits, which students gathered around to roast marshmallows for s’mores. Those who attended the party also played cornhole, and a spontaneous volleyball game broke out.
Among the people present were Director of Mission Integration Sister Therese Wetta, Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry Father Ed Herzog, Director of Student Activities Joshua Schoenecker-Prilliman, members of SGA, members of the baseball team and executive board members of the Jets for Life club.
Sophomore Payton Meyer, a member of campus ministry, said that honoring and informing students about the school’s namesake, St. John Henry Newman, was one of the goals for the event.
“He is integrated as a big part of our Catholic culture and campus ministry,” Meyer said. “We want to be able to celebrate that with everyone here on campus.”
