Theatre professor appears in movie about pioneer days

Do you ever wonder what professors do outside of their jobs at Newman?

Mark Mannette, Newman’s director of theatre, is an actor who has appeared in many films. Most recently, he appeared in a film called “Sod & Stubble” and also served as the producer and first assistant director.

The film follows members of a pioneer family in the late 19th century as they work on their land.

“I play John Ise, the author of the book that the film is based on,” Mannette said. “In the story, we see him at various ages growing up. I provide the frame story.”

Mannette’s oldest son, Aiden, a 2021 Newman graduate, plays the younger version of Mannette's character, and his youngest son, Ben, plays the main character’s older brother.

Mannette became a part of the film because he was familiar with its director, Ken Spurgeon, with whom he had worked on previous projects.

On Oct. 2, members of Newman’s staff attended a watch party for the film. Earlier this year, the movie was screened in 65 theaters nationwide.

The film is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.
