The Sloppy Joes, Newman’s improv troupe, has started its year with a few shows and a few more Sloppys. And soon, the actors will put on their favorite event of the year: Their every-semester rated-R show.
It will be at 10 p.m. Friday in the Jabara Black Box Theater and will feature the actors portraying characters from different horror films, with a surprise catch. The performance will include more explicit themes than a typical Joes show.
So far this year, the Sloppy Joes have put on two shows and hosted a workshop intended to help it scout out potential new members. This year’s troupe has five new players.
The Joes have a busy schedule lined up for this year. Over spring break, the actors plan to travel to Omaha to perform with other improv troupes in the area.
“We'll likely just be in someone else's improv show…,” said co-captain Deqlan Mitchell. “We still get to experience other improv. We'll meet other improv teams that are from the area. We'll get to see how they do stuff and interact with them.”
Fundraising will be needed to make the trip happen, Mitchell said.
How will the Joes raise the money?
“We do want to do a food sale and things like that,” said co-captain Trevino.
Admission to Friday’s show is free, but the team accepts donations at all of its shows.
Following is the roster for this year’s Sloppy Joe troupe:

Deqlan Mitchell, junior, co-captain
