A big new television set was recently added to the wall in the Mabee Dining Center, but it’s not for binging the new season of “Stranger Things.”
The 85-inch Smart television set, which was recently put on the east wall of the main dining room, is the result of a bill passed earlier this year by the Student Government Association.
Senior Faith Crabb, who initially proposed the bill, said that the television set is intended for use by student clubs. SGA also wants to use it to help students get behind Newman’s athletic teams.
“The main reason was to give clubs and different organizations a different space to host events and to also try to foster the relationship between athletes and non-athletes so that we can watch different athletic games,” she said.
The set will be able to stream Newman sports teams’ away games: Newman Athletics has offered to sponsor a subscription to the MIAA Network, which televises conference games.
SGA paid $800 for the television and $40 for the mount.
The addition of the new TV will be celebrated during the Polar Express event that’s planned for 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday in Mabee Dining Center. The party, a collaboration between SGA and Campus Activities Board, will also feature “holiday magic and prizes.” It’s meant to build community on campus, Crabb said, and faculty and staff members will be encouraged to bring their children.
Crabb said that use of the television will be restricted to use by clubs and people who want to gather to watch Newman teams play. SGA wants to make sure the remote control to the television does not get lost, so anyone wanting to use the television will need to ask permission from Kelli Griffin, the director of Mabee Dining Center.
