Month of events to honor Newman’s heritage

It’s Heritage Month at Newman, which means there’s a lot going on. Students can win a cash prize, get free food, attend events, participate in activities, and much more. 

Newman’s 12th annual Heritage Month started on Monday and will run through March 4. Sister Therese Wetta said that the month provides many opportunities for students to learn about Newman University and the important people in its history.

“Heritage Month really is about honoring both St. Maria (De Mattias) and St. (John Henry) Newman and the sisters who founded us,” Wetta said. “I consider that very much also related to who we are as a Catholic institution and our philosophy of education.”

Here’s a guide to some of the activities happening during Heritage Month:

TODAY

Medallion Hunt:Heritage Month’s annual Medallion Hunt started on Tuesday, promising a $200 cash prize to whomever found the hidden disc. As of Wednesday night, it had not been found. The medallion is hidden somewhere on campus, and clues are sent out daily at newmanu.edu/heritagemonth

Lunch and Learn: Students from Africa will discuss their experiences during a panel discussion that starts at 12:15 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Room. Drinks and dessert will be provided.

TUESDAY

Spaghetti Night: The ASC sisters are hosting a Spaghetti dinner for students from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at The Landing.

WEDNESDAY

First Presentation on St. Newman: In honor of St. Newman being named the 38th Doctor of the Church, Dr. Bud Marr, will give a presentation titled, “Forming Hearts and Minds: St. John Henry Newman’s Message for Today’s Church” at 7 p.m. in the Sister Tarcisia Roths ASC Alumni Center in the Dugan Library. Marr is a Newman Scholar and contributed to the petition to declare St. Newman a Doctor of the Church.

FEB. 12

Second Presentation on St. Newman: Marr will give a second presentation at noon in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Room in the Dugan Library. Lunch will be provided. This presentation is titled, “Faith, Reason, and the Modern World: St. Newman’s Enduring Witness.”

FEB. 19

St. Newman Mass: Mass will start at 12:05 p.m. in St. John’s Chapel to honor St. Newman.

High Tea: This high tea event is rooted in St. Newman’s era of 19th century English tradition. It will offer tea and traditional English appetizers and will be served from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. In previous years, appetizers included cucumber sandwiches with mint butter, currant tarts, lemon bread, poppy seed cake and lemon ginger pound cake.

FEB. 26

Homecoming game: Jets basketball will face off against Northwest Missouri State. The women start at 5:30 p.m., and men will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Fugate Gymnasium. During halftime of the men’s game, the homecoming king and queen will be announced.

FEB. 27

Trivia Night: CAB and Student Life are hosting the fourth annual Trivia Night at 7 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. The Asian Student Association and the Hispanic American Leadership Organization will be selling fried rice, eggrolls and aguas frescas to fundraise for their clubs. Teams will have six members and tickets will be $10 per person. All proceeds will benefit the Student Affairs Office. Tickets can be purchased at onecau.se/nutrivia

MARCH 3

Giving Day: Newman will host fundraising events throughout the day to raise money for areas of campus including fine arts, athletics, metanoia, student affairs, the Newman Fund and the five schools.

ASC Dinner and Reflection: The ASC Sisters will host a dinner followed by a reflection at the ASC Center.

MARCH 4

ASC Foundation Day: The final event of Heritage Month is a closing mass at 12:05 p.m. in St. John’s Chapel followed by a social in the Heritage Room
