A new Art Club was recently created, and its leaders are planning to elevate campus by tapping into student creativity.
Art Club, which was approved by SGA on Feb. 19, will be organized by freshman AJ Bonilla as president and freshman Dani Soto-Lopez as vice president.
The leaders are hoping to provide an outlet for students to express themselves as well as to participate in the process of putting on events.
“I think they need a creative outlet because events happen to them and for them but not with them,” Bonilla said.
Before the club’s official approval, some members helped the Asian Student Association set up decor for its Lunar New Year event. They plan to continue collaborating with other student organizations by making and setting up decorations.
“We were trying to step away from the stereotypical, ‘You need a canvas and a paint brush to be a part of our club,’” Bonilla said. “It doesn’t feel special.”
They not only want to engage students in club participation but also make campus a more lively place where students can bond over art.
“It’s a way to build a community and just share interests and a hobby that could be beneficial for the school, and in mental health,” Soto-Lopez said.
Improving the student community isn’t their only goal. The club members want to beautify campus as well.
“We noticed that there’s a bunch of walls empty around the school, so we just want to add some more color and more life,” Soto-Lopez said.
Art Club’s first event will likely be a fundraiser taking place after spring break, Bonilla said. Its meetings will happen at 5 p.m. Tuesdays in the Student Success Center
“Everyone’s welcome, and we want to always be an outlet for everyone’s individual creativity.”
