A decade-old Newman University tradition that celebrates the diverse backgrounds of the Jet community is returning this spring. The Cultural Extravaganza is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. April 11 in the Fugate Gymnasium and Atrium.
The event first began nine years ago with the creation of the Multicultural Leadership Organization. From its inception, it has served as a bridge for students from various backgrounds, including Vietnamese, Japanese, Bolivian, Nigerian, Mexican, and Bahamian cultures.
Katherine Reynoso, director of multicultural engagement and campus life, said that this year marks a significant transition for the event. Because the MCLO is inactive following the graduation of its executive members last year, a new coalition has stepped up to manage the event. The Student Government Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, and Asian Student Association are collaborating to ensure the celebration continues, though it will happen on a smaller scale this year.
Organizers are offering a variety of incentives to get people to attend this year, including a "Gift Box" drawing featuring prizes provided by local donors. Melissa Arguijo, student government association secretary and Cultural Extravaganza’s lead organizer, said the event focuses heavily on participation.
"We will showcase our great NU community," Arguijo said. "It’s a day to talk, learn, and celebrate who we are."
Beyond entertainment, the event will feature a big international buffet. Among the dishes that will be provided by local restaurants and cooks are:
- African jollof rice provided by the Tryphena Kayode family
- Salvadorian pupusas from Delicias de El Salvador
- Peruvian saltado de pollo from Gabby’s Peruvian Restaurant
- Korean kimbap and ramen from Grace Market and Gangnam BBQ
- Vietnamese pho and boba from the Ba family and Leaf Tea House.
The entertainment lineup includes performances by Folklorico and Vietnamese fan dancers, as well as a student runway show showcasing international fashion. This year, various campus clubs will also host tables where they will share cultural history.
The event is open to the public, and admission includes one meal ticket. Admission is free for Newman students with an ID; $5 for faculty and staff; $10 for adults; and $3 for children ages 2-10.
Registration for the fashion runway is now open, and organizers are looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes. Interested students must notify Arguijo by Monday to participate in the runway show. The volunteer signup is available at www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0949ACAD2FA2F9C70-63227390-cultural#/.
