An honest review of 'that Popeye's sandwich'

By Roo Rusk, Staff Writer

Well folks, as it turns out, money can in fact buy you happiness… for the low price of about $3.99 plus sales tax at your local Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen.

For those of you who haven’t already groaned and put down the paper, yes, I’m talking about the one and only “Classic Chicken Sandwich” sweeping the nation by storm and causing overworked, underpaid Popeye’s workers everywhere to take a hard look at an early retirement.

A few short weeks ago, Popeye’s did what many have never dared to do- go to war with the infamous Chick-Fil-A over who really knows their way around chicken, pickles, and a couple of buns. For days I’ve watched friends on social media record their futile attempts to try one of these elusive creations only to fail miserably when they realize Popeye’s was completely sold out. Alright, so one must wait for that which is worth waiting for, and besides, patience is a virtue right?

Days later, skeptical but determined to taste this “holy grail” of chicken sandwiches, I strategically pulled up around (are you writing this down?) 2:30 pm and made my move.

Much to my surprise, not only was there a short line, but they weren’t all out! (There is a god!)

I will say, while the good people of Popeye’s may not bend over backwards to cater to your every whim, you can still expect pretty decent service even in the drive-thru.

I swiftly pulled over, unwrapped my sandwich, and was instantly humbled. This thing even looks like the ads! And I’m all too aware that the food you see on commercials is either plastic or covered in hairspray to look so mouthwatering.

And now for the moment of truth… you guys. To say this thing is “worth the hype” would perhaps be the understatement of the century. I took one bite and swore I could hear angels.

I am not exaggerating when I say Popeye’s has truly crafted the pinnacle of flavor here. The CFA sandwich walked so this could run.

You will rethink everything you know about everything. You will see sounds. The pure, unbridled joy I felt from each and every bite this thing could cure cancer. Gordon Ramsey himself could never dream of concocting such a meal. Not to mention, this groundbreaking pioneer of a restaurant is only a couple blocks away from campus on Seneca Street. Oh yeah, and the best part? It’s open on Sunday. I give it 11 stars out of 10.
