Intramurals start the semester with cornhole

By: Alexis Stallard, Editor-in-Chief

The Midwest is the land of many great things, like Ranch dressing, the phrase “ope”, and more. However, one Midwest specialty is about to become Newman’s newest intramural sport: cornhole.

Senior Lauren Esfeld, one of the students involved in bringing intramurals back to campus, said that cornhole will be the first intramural sport this semester, followed by two or three more later this year. Basketball, pickleball and kickball or spikeball are the possible choices for the other events.

Cornhole play started on Monday and will be at 8:30 p.m. every Monday for the next three weeks. First place will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and second place will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. The deadline to signup for cornhole is Friday. Students can keep an eye on the SAAC or SGA Instagram accounts, then Jet Broadcast, or any of the TVs around campus that will have information about sign-ups for intramurals for the rest of the semester.

“The posts will always either have a link attached or a QR code that will take you directly to the google form to sign up,” Esfeld said.

Esfeld also said that the sign-up forms will always have more information about the event, such as what prizes are available to win and the rules for the sport being played.

To recommend a sport for intramurals, Esfeld said, students should direct message either the SAAC or SGA Instagram accounts with suggestions. They can also contact Deb Jensen in Sacred Heart.

Any students wanting to help with running intramural sports are encouraged to contact Jensen, Esfeld or year Ian Lecki. Esfeld said that certain student positions are paid and that applications will be accepted at the end of this year for next fall.
