The Schwartz twins – Brenden and Austin – were both Newman students just a few years ago.
Now, they’re both Newman graduates, but they’re back at their alma mater this weekend to present two different one-act plays.
“Chekov,” written by Austin Schwartz, is an homage to Anton Chekhov, a famous 19th-century playwright and author. “Looking for Directions” by Brenden Schwartz is a nod to absurdist playwright Samuel Beckett.
Austin graduated in 2023, and Brenden graduated in 2022. Both brothers are members of the local “SayWhat!? Improv troupe, and Austin works at Newman as the technical director for the theater department.
In addition to writing their own one-act plays, each brother is directing his play as well. Among the students performing in the plays: Sophomore Joseph Kiley as Beckett and senior Steven Brown as Chekhov. Other student performers will be juniors Luke Jones and Abigail Oberly.
Performances are at 7 p.m. tonight through Saturday in the Jabara Flexible Theatre in DeMattias Hall. Admission at the door is $10 for the public, $5 for students and free for Newman students.
