Fall break? What we're getting is actually a long weekend

By Allison Hernandez, Staff Writer

Fall break is supposed to give college students a chance to relax, recharge and take some time away from school.

However, at Newman University, this year’s fall break runs from Oct. 16-18, with two of those days falling on the weekend. That leaves students with only one extra day off from classes, making it feel more like a long weekend than an actual fall break.

College students have a lot to balance throughout the semester, from classes and assignments to jobs, athletics and other responsibilities. Having a break in the middle of the semester can be helpful, but one extra day does not always feel like enough time to step away from everything.

Other universities offer a little more time off. Wichita State University’s fall break runs from Oct. 10-13, giving students two weekdays off in addition to the weekend. Having that extra time can make a difference for students who want to travel home, spend time with family or simply catch up on rest.

While a three-day weekend is still appreciated, it would be nice for Newman students to have a little more time off as well. Adding one more day to fall break could give students more time to relax and enjoy the break without feeling like it is over as soon as it begins.

Fall break does not need to be an entire week long to make a difference. Even one additional day could make it feel more like a true break from school rather than just another long weekend.

If the purpose of fall break is to give students time to recharge during a busy semester, extending it by one day seems like a reasonable way to make that time more meaningful
