Need help suceeding? Newman has a workshop for that

By Alyson Lawrence, Staff Writer

Student success and retention specialist Lawna Kurtyka is behind a series of new workshops designed to help students create good study habits, manage their time and learn about resources around Newman.

“These workshops are new this year,” Kurtyka said, “We’ve talked about them in previous years, but this was a good time to roll it out”

So far this year, she has put on four workshops covering topics like academics, time management and dorm living.

The most recent workshop took place on Wednesday and advised students on how to work with faculty members.

“I tried to put topics you would need in the beginning of the year for fall first semester,” Kurtyka said, “And we are looking at doing some for second semester as well”

All students are welcome at the workshops, Kurtyka said. Some workshops have been held in the afternoon and some have happened in the evening,

“I’m interested and I’d be open to feedback on what times students would like for the workshops to be held because I think the topics are relevant,” Kurtyka, said

The next workshop will be held at 1p.m. Nov 4. in 124 Eck hall and will offer information on mental health resources. The last session, scheduled for Nov. 18, will cover good personal choices.

The workshops so far have drawn between 10 and 40 students each, Kurtyka said. They all take place in DeMattias Hall, room 186. Students are asked to sign up for the workshops using their Accudemia accounts.

“I really would like to see more students across the campus come and attend,” she said.

Freshman Taylor Chrisp attended the most recent workshop about working with faculty. First-time student athletes at Newman are required to attend at least three workshops.

“When I first found out I had to attend the workshops, I wasn’t sure how beneficial they would be,” Chrisp said, “But after attending, I do think they can help with a lot of confusion that first-time students have.”
