A first-year Newman student identified by campus officials as McKenzie Rohr was found dead in Carrocci Hall on Sunday morning.
Newman President Kathleen Jagger met with Carrocci residents on Sunday afternoon and said that Rohr was discovered by another resident, who then contacted a resident assistant.
The resident assistant, who recognized Rohr, contacted emergency services. Authorities responded and pronounced Rohr dead on the scene.
Rohr’s cause of death is not yet known. Jagger told Carrocci residents that counselors would be available on campus on Monday.
Later, she sent a message out through email to everyone on campus saying details would be announced soon.
"Father Ed Herzog, Sr. Therese Wetta and members of the Residence Hall and Student Life teams are also here to help you over the coming days," the email said.
Rohr, who was from Solomon, Kansas, was a member of the track and field team and was a sports media and promotion major.
Associate vice president Geri Tyrell also sent out a message to Rohr’s professors on Sunday sharing news of her death.
Police cars and a vehicle marked “coroner” could be seen in front of Carrocci Hall on Sunday afternoon. Jagger told students that Rohr’s family is making arrangements to travel to Wichita.
