Celebrate spooky season with these haunted houses

By Leanne Vastbinder, Opinions and Online Editor

During the month of October, it’s customary to stock up on apple cider or visit a pumpkin patch or two. Some may even scout around the town for various haunted houses or spooky attractions to get in the Halloween mood. To get in the Halloween spirit, here are a few haunted houses around Wichita students can visit.

Field of Screams

4055 N. Tyler Road

This attraction is one of the most popular Halloween exhibits in Wichita. Located in mostly corn fields, legend says the grounds once belonged to the Spurlock family before they were eventually murdered in their home. The attraction includes both indoor and outdoor sections, each place having a different theme. Junior Braxton Stewart went to Field of Screams last year for the first time and said she really enjoyed it.

“My favorite part of it is how in character all the people that are working it are, it was fun,” Stewart said. Field of Screams will be open through November 2nd. Tickets are $20 on Fridays, $25 on Saturdays, and $15 on Sundays. The gates open at 7 p.m. and don’t close until after 11:30 p.m.

Forest of Terror

5059 N. Ridge Road

This outdoor Halloween trail hails itself as “the only haunted forest in Kansas.” Made up of various paths through the trees, this place offers a chance to walk in a forest that “will make even the biggest horror fan cry for their mummy,” according to their website. Tickets are $17 per person, and the gates open at 7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October.

Wicked Island

3022 S. Mclean Blvd.

This Halloween attraction offers haunted island trails as well as an indoor escape room. Tickets for the haunted island start at $20, while the escape room costs $40 for the first two people and $10 for each additional person. The website recommends calling ahead to make a reservation for the escape room since availability is limited. Wicked Island is open every Friday and Saturday in October from 8 p.m. until midnight.
