Newman is holding a blood drive

By Tejay Cleland, Guest Writer

The Newman community will have the opportunity to give blood later this month as part of a blood drive that will take place on campus.

The annual blood drive will take place on Oct. 22 in the Gorges Atrium in O’Shaughnessey Hall.

After increasing numbers from two years ago, organizers said, they’re hoping to attract at least 43 donors, the same number who gave at last year’s blood drive.

Director of radiology technology Jeffery Vaughn is hosting the event and said he encourages students to donate because of the need for blood worldwide.

“As much as I’ve been around the world, being in the military for 20 years, you see all kinds of people who need blood,” Vaughn said. “It’s not in just any one location either. It’s everywhere.”

Vaughn said he is inspired to help host the blood drive each year since he himself cannot give blood.

“I personally cannot donate blood myself because I lived in Belgium many years ago. So if I can’t donate, I may as well do my part and help put one on.”

Many faculty members have donated at the Newman blood drive in the past, including associate chemistry professor, Ryan Huschka.

Huschka said he has a personal reason to donate each year.

“I have had many relatives in tough situations who needed blood,” he said. “I think it is important that if you are healthy and able to donate, to help those that are in need.”

Vaughn also makes an effort to make donating as fun as he can, he said. Snacks and drinks will be available on site for everyone who donates.

The blood drive will last from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“I usually try to make it pretty interesting,” Vaughn said. “[Two years ago] I came dressed as Dracula. Last year I came dressed as Bob the Builder, so I am not sure what I want to go with this year.”
