Returning students to be able to select their dorms

By: Austin Schwartz, Staff Writer

It’s that time of year again for students planning to live on campus next year to sign up for their “preferred housing.”

On Friday Residence Life will be set up for students to register for preferred dorm buildings and rooms. Students will need to have filled out a housing application and contract beforehand.

In previous years Turner Middendorf, director of residence life, has waited till the summer to build the housing roster. But Middendorf, who will soon leave Newman and move to Topeka, said his hope is to get the roster finished in advance to make the transition for his replacement go smoothly.

“We will be printing the residence halls’ floor plans on large sheets, and students will be able to write their names in the room that they want,” he said. “We hope that this will get us a head start and build around half of next year’s roster before summer even starts.”

Administrators have said they hope that a new Director of Residence Life will begin in May. They are currently interviewing candidates but have not made an offer yet.

Freshmen and transfer students will be required to live in Carrocci since they are first-time students. Only returning students will have the opportunity to select the rooms of their choice.

If students are unable to make it to Jet Friday this week, they can stop by the Residence Life Office between Monday and April 14 to choose a room.
