It was a happy homecoming night for Newman University on Wednesday as both teams were victorious over opponents Northeastern State University.

The women’s team played first and won by a score of 74 to 66. The men’s team also won its game 79 to 74.

Newman also crowned a homecoming king and queen. Senior Austin Schwartz was voted king, and Elizabeth Raehpour was voted queen.

Homecoming isn’t just about the big game but all of the events that go along with it. This week was full of free food events where students got things like Chick-fil-A, apple cider and cookies and a Walking Taco lunch. Banners promoting the game were hung around campus, and there were even dress-up days every day of the week: dress as your favorite faculty/staff member, dress like you did on Zoom, dress like your favorite superhero and more.

Students have different opinions about what made homecoming fun.

“The best part about homecoming is the basketball games and supporting our community,” said sophomore Felisa Sajulga. “I also love to watch the homecoming court and the crowd, as well as all of the energy throughout the week and at the game.”

King candidates included: Schwartz, Christian Alex DeHoet, Marcus Lines, and John Suffield. Queen candidates were: Raehpour, Michelle Tong, Talia Powers, Hadassah Umbarger, and Lauren Esfeld. The voting closed on Wednesday at noon.
