Wednesday was Earth Day 2026, and to help celebrate it, one of Newman’s most dedicated conservationists, Sister Therese Wetta, organized a whole week of activities around it.
The event, called Earth Week Festival, started on Monday, when students were invited to “touch grass” all day in the Quad. On Tuesday, the Psych Club participated by showing a movie called “Climate Stories.”
On Wednesday, not only did Mabee Dining Center offer Earth Day specials, but the Art Club also invited students to practice art in nature by painting rocks on Heritage Plaza.
Those who missed out on the first part of Earth Week can still participate today and Friday.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, the Staff Assembly will be putting on a plant and bake sale in Dugan Library, and at 7 p.m., the Gaming Club is inviting students to play a climate-themed game in Fugate Student Center.
On Friday, students from Mayberry Cultural and Fine Arts Magnet Middle School and their teacher, Newman alumna Ashley Brooks, will be at Newman to help beautify the campus as part of their Earth Week Project. They’ll be on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
A full guide to Earth Week activities is listed on bright yellow posters hanging in buildings around campus.
