Newman athletes and coaches will gather on Wednesday for the 11th annual Jetspys, which will take place in Fugate Gymnasium.
The awards ceremony, put on by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and named as an ode to ESPN’s ESPY Awards, recognizes Newman athletes for their accomplishments over the school year, said Alex Schreiner, a senior softball player and a member of SAAC. The event always includes dinner, and athletes attend dressed in formal wear.
One thing the event won’t include this year, despite warnings from SAAC; a breathalyzer at the door.
At a recent SAAC meeting, student athletes were told that, because of unruly behavior at past Jetspys, where students have been known to show up inebriated and unruly, drinking before or during the event would not be tolerated and that using a breathalyzer on those entering the event was being considered.
Instead, “Coaches have been asked to speak with their teams to ensure a safe evening,” said Maureen Rohleder, associate athletic director and the administrative advisor for SAAC.
Awards given out at the Jetspys incorporate Air Force-themed terminology, such as “Best Wingman,” which is awarded to a reserve player who made a significant impact. One male and one female athlete receive each award.
Student athletes will be able to vote for the winners on a Google form that will be sent out via email.
