Cornhole tournament to start new season of Newman intramurals

By Tyler Push, Staff Writer

Need to get out of the house and free yourself from boredom? Newman Intramurals is here to help.

As of Wednesday, intramural sports are back up and running after ending abruptly due to the pandemic concerns last year. The Cornhole League is the first event that intramurals will host with plans to have one more contest before the end of the semester. No decisions have been made yet on what the next event might be or when exactly it will occur, organizers said.

Sixteen teams entered the cornhole contest, and each team will play two games a night every Wednesday starting at 8 p.m.. The tournament will begin with two weeks of pool play followed by a couple weeks of tournament play after all of the teams are seeded.

Residence Life Graduate Assistant Jon Coufal, director of the tournament, said that the tournament is projected to be double elimination and said he hopes that everyone will have a lot of fun playing.

Teams will be playing for a first place prize of two Insignia 32” Smart TVs, a second place prize of two 4K Firesticks, and a third place prize of $20 in quarters for each member of the team.

“The prizes are pretty nice so I expect everyone to be on their A-game,” Coufal said.

COVID has caused many complications but Residence Life Director Turner Middendorf is doing what he can to make intramurals feel like it has been in the past.

“We will try to keep as much normalcy as we can in intramurals, but we will need to run programs that allow for as much social distancing as possible,” he said.

More intramural events will be held in the future so keep your eye out for posters hung around campus and keep checking your emails, Middendorf said. Newman Intramurals will use SignUpGenius as much as possible to sign up for events, but will also be taking written sign ups in the cafeteria when an event is approaching. Participants can also send their sign ups to Intramurals@newmanu.edu or CoufalJ@newmanu.edu.
